Biosphere 2, under the management of The University of Arizona, is located north of Tucson -- 35 miles and less than one hour from Lodge on the Desert's front driveway -- at the base of the Santa Catalina Mountains. The world's largest glass-enclosed mini-world sits on a 4,000 foot-ridge, surrounded by magnificent natural desert preserve. The visitor center houses numerous exhibits, including the recently-added Phoenix Mars Lander, and multi-media displays along with a Bookstore and Café and main theater which features a movie describing the past, present and future of the Biosphere 2 project. The 'under glass' tour showcases the beautiful trail system that lets you smell the ocean and experience a tropical Rainforest up close. Additionally the tour takes visitors through the basement "technosphere" and into the amazing lungs that help the Biosphere system breathe. The tour concludes in the custom-built underwater ocean viewing gallery where guests can explore the million-gallon ocean and its real coral reef.
