Kitt Peak National ObservatoryTucson Astronomy
An observation made nightly by nearly all visitors to Southern Arizona is how clear the Tucson skies are and how bright the stars and planets shine here. Guests experience this with the naked eye from the grounds of Lodge on the Desert. It's not imagined; it's real. Even better, an area destination attraction exists -- only 18 minutes and 11 miles from Lodge's front driveway -- where guests can experience this phenomenon more dramatically. Kitt Peak National Observatory. Located high above the Sonoran Desert on the Tohono O'odham Reservation. Home to twenty-four optical and two radio telescopes representing eight astronomical research institutions, it boasts the world's largest collection of optical telescopes. The Kitt Peak National Observatory Visitor Center is open to the public daily from 9 AM to 4 PM, except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's day. Guided tours are offered daily, and group tours are available by appointment. Visitors can stargaze at Kitt Peak during their Nightly Observing Programs. This isn't at all a 'nerds only' past time. Who hasn't at one time or another (perhaps often) looked up at the sky to ponder its mystery and beauty? When visiting Tucson, here's your opportunity and place to view it in a once-in-a-lifetime way. So, definitely plan to incorporate Kitt Peak National Observatory into your itinerary when you come. But first, don't let the stars get in your eyes! Make your guest room reservations at Lodge on the Desert. |
