If you think the only drinkable West coast domestic wines come from California, Oregon, and Washington states perhaps you should try visiting the wineries of Southern Arizona! That’s right. Southern Arizona. Several wineries and vineyards await your visit and your tasting . . . and they’re all within a two-hour drive of Tucson. For information about specific wineries, and tour times, contact:

Callaghan Vineyards

Located in the rolling oak-dotted hills of southeastern Arizona, at an elevation of 4800 feet, Callaghan Vineyards produces rich, complex red and white wines from its 25 acre vineyard. Mediterranean and Spanish varietals – Tempranillo, Mourvedre, Petit Verdot, Petite Sirah and Grenache – are the basic building blocks for its red blends, while Viognier and Riesling are blended for its estate white wine.

Canelo Hills Vineyard and Winery

In 2003, Tim and Joan Mueller established Canelo Hills Vineyard and Winery on 10 acres in the heart of Sonoita’s beautiful grasslands. Joan grows the grapes for the wine Tim makes. Their wines reflect the Sonoita appellation’s marriage of sun loving grapes to the hot, dry days and cool, clear nights of the high desert.

Charron Vineyards

Nestled in a virtual suburb of Tucson, Leo Cox began building his dream vineyard in his late 60′s, alone and by hand. His single minded focus has produced some of the finest Merlot grapes grown anywhere in the world. What is extraordinary however, is the wine. Charron Vineyard handcrafts about 200 cases annually of White Merlot. This wine has the honeyed crispness of a premium chardonnay with the medium body of a red. Each case is custom labeled with a note for its intended recipient. Most of the wine is sold to private parties for weddings, birthdays, auctions and other events.
